ATTENTION!! Mini-Motorcycle UPDATE Posted 06/01/05

From DPS HEADQUARTERS

Miniature motorcycles are illegal to operate on public roadways.  Also known as "pocket-bikes and pocket rockets" can only be operated on private property.  Some buyers have been told that they are legal on public streets in some circumstances, but there are no exceptions.  One misconception is that they meet the legal definition of  a motor assisted scooter. However, pocket bikes do not meet the statutory requirements of a motor assisted scooter as defined in TRC 551.301.  The two primary reasons they are illegal are #1- they cannot be registered as vehicles and #2- they cannot, and do not meet the equipment standards required by federal and state law.  Drivers using  mini-motorcycles on public streets could face numerous charges including: operating an unregistered vehicle, no driver's license, no insurance, and several equipment violations.  It is also illegal to operate these vehicles on sidewalks.

It could be a very expensive proposition to use these vehicles on public roadways. So our advice is simple- DON'T!  The Littlefield Police Department will begin issuing citations for these violations as of June 1st, 2005. Please do not operate these vehicles on public roads, alleys or sidewalks.  Thank YOU!!!

New Texas Law- Posted 05/23/05

Every year emergency workers are injured or killed when struck by a passing car while assisting drivers involved in a motor vehicle accident, or while police officers are taking enforcement action against traffic violations

In September 2003, a new law took effect requiring drivers to slow to 20 mph below the posted speed limit, or move over one lane (if possible) when passing a police officer, firefighter, or paramedic working on the side of the road.  Please always be alert for emergency lights flashing, and be prepared to move over one lane or slow down.

03/04/05 -- The Littlefield Police Department proudly introduces a brand new, state of the art 911 system.  This system was provided and funded by the South Plains Association of Governments.  This service is for you- the citizen and will greatly increase the effectiveness of the local 911 system.  In the near future, our 911 system will not only track all emergency calls, but will add a geographic mapping system that will ensure that responders arrive in the most timely manner.
